Originally the FEWD was spring 2002 opened at the philosophy department of the University of Vienna by the former longtime mayor of Vienna Dr. Michael Häupl, a zoologist. The FEWD was initiated by three eminent Austrian researcher Prof. P. Kampits, Prof. C. Ehalt and Prof. M. Wuketits.
